En-ROADS Climate Interactive

Page history last edited by Brian G. Dowling 1 year, 7 months ago

Note: As stated on this Wiki's landing page, this is not meant to be a substitute for the actual En-Roads site, merely a point for introduction and quick access, not a teaching site but a co-learning site. You can scroll past the table of contents and glance over to quickly review the available material if that's easier.

    En-ROADS Climate Change Solutions Simulator

    • The simulation, developed by Climate Interactive, Ventana Systems, and MIT Sloan, runs on an ordinary laptop in a fraction of a second, is available online, offers an intuitive interface, has been carefully grounded in the best available science, and has been calibrated against a wide range of existing integrated assessment, climate and energy models.

      • Imagine yourself, alongside other global and community leaders worldwide, facilitating dynamic conversations that lead to climate action. You can do this by leading events online or in-person using a new tool – En-ROADS – an interactive model that synthesizes the best available climate science on what is needed for climate action.

      • The En-ROADS Climate Workshop helps build support for strategies to address climate change via interactive testing of the cutting-edge simulation model En-ROADS. The resulting experience is hopeful, scientifically-grounded, action-oriented, and eye-opening.

      • Climate Interactive creates interactive, easy-to-use, and scientifically rigorous simulations that enable people to see connections, play out scenarios, and see what works to address the biggest challenges we face. Our simulations are built using the long tradition of system dynamics modeling out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

      • "As part of Climate Interactive’s mission to create accessible, learning-oriented tools and simulations, we are proud to provide a suite of free, online resources to deliver critical insights for understanding and addressing climate change. Whether you are trying to reach geographically diverse audiences, or are navigating the challenges of remote learning or working from home – we offer a portfolio of online resources and experiences. "

      • Climate Interactive is an independent, not-for-profit think-tank that grew out of MIT Sloan in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Based on a long tradition of system dynamics modeling, our simulations and insights help people see connections, play out scenarios, and see what works to address climate change, inequity, and related issues like energy, health, and food.

      • The December 2020 update to En-ROADS includes a new baseline scenario, which leads to a lower global temperature in 2100: 3.6°C (6.5°F) instead of 4.1°C (7.3°F).

      • This guide provides background on the dynamics of En-ROADS, tips for using the simulator, general descriptions, real-world examples, slider settings, and model structure notes for the different sliders in En-ROADS.

      • In addition to this User Guide, there is an extensive Reference Guide that covers model assumptions and structure, as well as references for data sources.

      • Becoming an En-ROADS Climate Ambassador and effective facilitator of the En-ROADS Climate Workshop or Climate Action Simulation takes significant preparation. With the resources below, we are happy to support you to learn about the En-ROADS simulator and facilitation techniques. There are many others around the world, like you, taking these steps too – welcome to the community!

      • Most of the dynamics in En-ROADS can be answered by these explanations:

    Guides (Examples)

      • Increase or decrease purchases of new electric cars, trucks, buses, trains, and ships. Using electric motors for transport helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution if the electricity is from low-carbon sources like solar and wind.

      • Encourage or discourage building nuclear power plants. Nuclear power production does not release carbon dioxide, but it produces harmful nuclear waste.
